Social Isolation and The Limits of Connectivity in Elderly Users (65+Years)
Essence: Hub Companion & The Haptics Wearable
The elderly demographic is often forgotten by modern-day technology's systematic development and increasing complexities. The difficulty to adjust is amplified by age-related decline in eyesight, dexterity, mobility and cognitive response time that prevent the user from going out in society and pursuing new relationships. In addition, there is a stigma attached to the admission of loneliness. The fear of further social condescension prevents the elderly user from reaching out, thereby intensifying the feeling of desolation. These factors led to a brief being identified and developed.
Customisation of the Haptics Wearable
The wearable revolutionises connectivity by recreating the sensation of a loved one's touch across distance through the use of sensors and haptic motors to achieve varying degrees of sensitivity and pressure.

Work Experience
My placement role as a Technology Intern at Ocado Technology allowed me to work through the design of a robotics-based project whilst developing a tight business case to support the viability of the product. I honed in on sketching, 3D modelling, design manufacture and data analytical skills.
The dynamic and fast-paced nature of Sand & Birch design consultancy allowed me to further develop client consultation skills and adhere to tight deadlines successfully. I was able to develop 3D modelling and CAD skills whilst gaining a strong understanding of what makes 'good' design.
Excellent teamwork and management skills were essential when working with SAP Leonardo on a live brief as part of the Engineering Education Scheme. Developmental thinking and exceptional problem solving were paramount in discovering the optimum solution in designing and prototyping the parts for a bridge deployment vehicle.
