'Boxing Day Tsunami, 2004', is a story-telling collection all about Sophie’s memories of being caught up in the Tsunami in Thailand when she was 6 years old whilst on a family holiday.



Inspired to create textile outcomes which act as a memorial, and bring communities together through a lived experience. Showcasing her childhood viewpoint telling her set of events, this communication tool of textile outcomes reflects emotional grief and tragedy, commemorating the day 227,898 people lost their lives. Sophie was heavily inspired by autobiographical textile artworks like Tracey Emin and JoAnn Robinson.



The acknowledgement of this significant time in history and the aftermath that followed consequently allows people who look at her collection to learn about her story and experiences of the devasting day, allowing time to reflect and educate themselves on just how deadly a Tsunami is. Her powerful reminder of this momentous event within Earth’s natural history holds a purpose for people never to forget.



Her colour palette derives from the bright and bold colours traditionally worn in Thai culture mixed with a monochrome palette to portray a harrowing and hazy memory she has of this time.



Sophie is an innovative, hands-on designer with a breadth of interests. Her forward-thinking, conceptual prints create original and contemporary outcomes that showcase her creative practice. She aims to pursue a career in combining her hand and digital skills whilst pushing the boundaries in design.
