Final year project
Clarity - A medical device that samples a user's saliva for viruses, such as Coronavirus, in the most efficient way with reduced environmental impacts.
Clarity
A sustainable medical testing device allowing users to test for viruses such as Coronavirus from saliva samples.
Depiction of a positive test result
This device uses mouthwash to take a saliva sample, instead of needing to use a cotton swab. When screwed back on, the specialist lid releases a solution which is reactive in the presence of 'Covid' antibodies, which are a catalyst for a chain reaction resulting in the solution changing colour- indicating a positive test result. Because of the universal nature of the design, this is a product that also has the potential to allow the user to test for other medical conditions such as pregnancy or HIV.
Prototyping
In the development of the design, I found the use of rapid prototyping incredibly beneficial. Because of the nature of the specialist lid, being able to test and improve the theoretical mechanism has allowed for the design to be refillable by the user with ease - allowing this one device to last the user a lifetime.

Work Experience
I spent my placement year working at Diageo - a global leader in the beverage & alcohol industry as their Prototyping and Concept Development Intern in their Innovation R&D office. Throughout the year I was able to gain real-world experience and develop as a designer. The work I was involved in ranged between both long-term projects and live briefs which allowed me to develop skills in 3D printing, both functional and aesthetic modelling for CEOs and stakeholders, CAD renderings, concept generation and working in a multidisciplinary team. Due to the global pandemic, I also learned a lot of valuable skills in communication and team collaboration from working in both in-person and remote workshops. It was a fantastic opportunity which I found eye-opening in my development into a designer and an experience which I have since been able to translate into my final year at Loughborough, and I look forward to taking into my future career.
