Flash - Removing Barriers to Visually Impaired Climbing
Flash - Removing Barriers to Visually Impaired Climbing
This device combines smart sensing capabilities with audio, visual and haptic feedback to create an intelligent guidance system. In this growing sport, it's important to allow access for all, this product gives new opportunities for those living with a visual impairment to partake in a new hobby or to train more independently. It also enhances the training process for able-bodied climbers through its tracking system and app connectivity.
Flash V2 - Internals
The design incorporates a thin-film sensor which tracks the limbs on the climbing holds. The user is given audio guidance through the use of multi-tonal sounds, visual cues, and subtle haptic feedback on the wall, creating an enhanced and smooth user experience. Developed for indoor climbing gyms and home wall enthusiasts.
User Testing
I employed empathetic testing methods to simulate different visual impairments and asked participants with a variety of experience levels in the sport to perform a series of tests. The tracking and locating ability of the design was put to the test alongside user and expert interviews.
Flight - A Stair Climbing Aid
Bridging the gap between a handrail and a stairlift, for those who would benefit from a helping hand but don't want it to take over their day to day activity.
Flight - Internals
In this week-long design brief, I wanted to explore a refined user experience through intelligent sensors. My aim was to design a process where the user could walk up and interact with the device without conscious thought. The current system for this design involves IR proximity sensors tuned to know which direction the user is coming from, then when the user applies pressure to the top surface the device starts to move in that direction. The device stops when the pressure is released. Ambient light sensors are used to switch on angled under-lighting for use at night.
Catering Toaster - Sketch Development
An example of sketch development from year 1. This design looked at creating an industry-standard modular toaster for luxury hotels and venues.
Carbon Footprint Analysis - Online Webinar
During my Internship, I got the chance to present my research into our company's Carbon Footprint to an international audience. Highlighting the changes we were making with our products for responsible production and the specific ways I was able to incorporate sustainable design into our new products under development.
Photoshop Rendering
Exploring alternatives to rendering software to visualise models in context.
