Ambience: Design for Generation Rent
‘Ambience’ is a project that aims to explore design for Generation Rent.
With private renting growing exponentially, designing for the home must evolve to include those whose ‘home’ is a feeling and not necessarily a consistent place. How can we use product experiences to give renters more spatial governance, combat renter anxiety and help them feel ‘at home’, in whatever four walls surround them?
Spatial Governance and Versatility.
A packaged sensory customisation device would bring a more versatile aura to a rented space through smart air purification and sensory lighting technology. Allowing the feeling of ‘home’ to become a companion to fit wherever a user may move in the future, no matter the type of landlord or spatial limitations.
Timeless, Longlasting.
The device is driven by honest, ritualistic interactions complemented by a nostalgic lantern form. Durable material choices and solid construction mean that Ambience should live on through the years.
Democratic Design.
Balancing function, form, quality and sustainability at a reasonable price creates the right conditions for more democratic design, supporting renters in living a more environmentally responsible and considered lifestyle.
Process.
Rigorous design thinking, sketching, prototyping and user testing were carried out to realise this project's vision.
Designed for Disassembly and Repair.
Design for repair and long life are key pillars of this project, putting a more responsible way of living at the centre of Ambience’s product story. A no adhesive, modular assembly allows for individual part repair and replacement.
User Focussed.
Meaningful interaction and security and key drivers for Ambience's touch-points. With privacy being a key concern to generation renters, all of Ambience's smart features are driven by wearable, camera-less sensors, with data, kept local to the device to offer trust and security to users.
Prototyping and User Testing.
3D printing was a core element of the development process. Learning to design for 3D printing opened the door to producing higher fidelity yet time-efficient prototypes, for more real and fruitful user testing scenarios.
