Nature's Highlander
Natures Highlander – Duster Coat
Hand-painted background on cotton drill using a variety of silkscreen designs based on landscape paintings of the highlands, using stock vat to strip backhand painting to the original fabric and create an expressive mark. The ‘Deer of the Earth’ placement print sits on the back. The connection between animals and nations is one we sometimes take for granted, but it has a long, rich history. To this day, the deer is a crucial element of the Scottish landscape and within my family history deer skulls and antlers have been used in the past to create specially crafted hiking sticks. The coat is lined with ‘The Clan’s’ print. Fuji silkscreen-printed with pigments based on Celtic family clan shields.
Alloa
The Alloa print is based on old Celtic blanket wraps before traditional kilts wear worn. This deconstructed large check mixes old Millar family photographs within the land. Named after where the family used to be based in the central lowlands. Three-layer registered screen-print using acid dyes on wool.
Scottish Heather
A nod to the nature observed travelling around the highlands and the appreciation for the distinctive dried heathers I collected on my journey. One layer stock Vat screen print on a reclaimed vintage shirt. Paired here with the Alloa wool blanket.
Strathyre
A mixture of abstract free brushstrokes hand-painted fabric using acid dyes printed into. Two-layer screen print on wool delaine fabric. To capture the deep blue lochs, high mountains and rich forests of Strathyre where my relatives used to holiday. Paired here with the Scottish Heather shirt.
Tavern Anecdotes
A reclaimed vintage shirt created using handmade linocuts and fabric block printing inks. In memory of my relative, Thomas Cochrane who was licenced to sell spirits and would read stories to guests from a book of tavern anecdotes passed down through my family. A mixture of imagery within the shirt is based on nature, the quirky stories he told and textures within the book.
Searching For Relatives
Drawing from 19th-century family photographs to capture each of my family members and their unique fashion style of the time, bringing them together as one. The sepia tones within the print are inspired by the tonal textures in the photos. Hand-painted Alexander Mcqueen Silk crinkle fabric with a one layer vat.
Hilton of Cadboll
Large-scale repeat length, on deadstock Alexander Mcqueen silk fabric printed using stock vat. Hand-painted back into with an acid grey undertone to recreate the standing stone shadows. Based on the storytelling and narratives from the original Hilton of Cadbol standing stone 800 AD in the northeast highlands of Scotland.
Close Up
Here shows a selection of the finished printed fabrics from the final collection although separate are bound together by common threads and colour stories.
