Charlotte Rose Amelia Coates

In my practice, I have been investigating relational aesthetics, a concept in which the artist is seen as a facilitator and hands over the power to the audience. I have been exploring this by creating garments designed to be worn by the viewer, this allows the viewer to become part of the piece itself. The viewer is in control of how they interact with the garments and the space around them. This is intended to immerse the viewer in the work and allow them to cross the line from observing to becoming. The imagery for my garments is inspired by the nostalgia of summertime and family holidays in the Caribbean. The colours and shapes are influenced by the beauty I find in the natural surroundings and organic forms there. The aim of my exhibition is to invite the audience into my work whilst creating the sense of joy I find in these places.
