My biggest project this year was a book that I wrote which has yet to be titled. The book follows the story of a young girl who has recently been burned and carries the audience through her time in hospital and the aftermath of the traumatic event. This book is primarily targeted toward burn survivor children, however, has no direct specification to this in the story. I wanted to create this book using knowledge from my own experience to help children with acceptance of such an event while tackling the emotional and physical changes that ensue. I was further encouraged to develop this project upon discovering that there was no existing work addressing this particular subject; I, therefore, felt it was especially necessary.
This page demonstrates a surgery being performed. The aim of this page was to depict the process of skin grafting, what it is and why it's important. A challenge of this book was finding a way to depict a serious and sad topic in a reassuring, non-threatening way that would be understood by my target audience. Throughout the book, I use the character's teddy bear as a metaphor for situations that are difficult to understand and come to terms with as a child.

This page indicates the mother of my character serenading her to sleep. Again, here I have used the depiction of the bear to create a warm and reassuring tone. This part of the story was inspired by my own memories during my experience in the hospital.
