Aquarius: A water quality tester to detect sewage contamination in bathing waters
Aquarius: Simple, Portable, Accurate
Aquarius is an easy to use water quality tester intended for regular water users to detect sewage contamination. It uses microfluidics technology to rapidly test for the presence of Norovirus and E. Coli in bathing waters. The results are shown directly to the user in real-time and uploaded to a companion app accessible to anyone, allowing accurate, up-to-date water quality data to be widely available.
A sample of water is collected in the top of the tester, this is then filtered through to two microfluidic testing cartridges when the top is pressed. The LED light on the front of the tester indicates the result, which is uploaded to an app to view in more depth and allow others to access the most recent water quality information.
An adjustable arm or leg strap allows users to wear the device when in the water. Acrylic microfluidic cartridges test the water and can be removed in between uses for cleaning.
Prototyping
A range of prototypes was developed for Aquarius using a mixture of materials and techniques.
